#89 Richard Koestner: A World-Leading Researcher Who Uses the Self-Determination Theory, the Leading Empirical Theory of Motivation in the 21st Century

Dr. Richard Koestner is a professor of Psychology at McGill University.  He completed his education at the University of Rochester and Harvard University.  

Richard founded McGill Human Motivation Lab 30 years ago and over the last 3 years has partnered with the Black Community Resource Center to examine the impact of the COVID pandemic on Black Young Adults.   

Richard won the Canadian Psychology Association’s Donald O. Hebb Award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Science. In 2007 Richard won the McGill University award for excellence in teaching and training. He has supervised over 30 successful Ph.D. students and more than 300 honor students. 

Richard is one of the world's leading proponents of Self-Determination theory and his recent work focuses on how to distinguish between personal and collective motivation.

In this episode, Richard starts by talking about what inspired him to become an award-winning teacher, researcher, and world-class leader of the Self-Determination Theory. He then explains that theory says all humans have three basic psychological needs; autonomy, competence, and relatedness that underlie growth and development. Richard then explains the difference between autonomy, competence, and relatedness. 

Richard explains that human motivation, the quality of motivation is key to both satisfaction and sustained success in achieving one’s goals. Motivated behavior can be driven by rewards, punishments, and internalized pressures from others. It can also be fueled by deeply held values or interests and enjoyment of the behavior itself. 

Richard then explains how everyday people can best motivate themselves to pursue valued goals. He then talks about greatness and whether it is born or grown. He then shares some inspiring stories of some world-class performers, discussing how they make the shift from good to great. Lastly, Richard provides his definition of greatness and what it means to him.
