The Availability Heuristic is a mental shortcut where we rely on readily available information when making decisions. It operates on the principle that if information easily comes to mind, it must be more significant.
This cognitive bias often leads to overestimating the likelihood of events or situations based on recent and accessible information.
Why Use It
Our minds tend to favour information that is easy to recall. Recent thoughts or memories gain exaggerated importance, and emotionally charged narratives leave a lasting imprint.
However, relying solely on the first thing that comes to mind can result in poor decision-making, as it may not represent the most accurate or relevant information.
